What are Nail Disorders?

Nail disorders can be both frustrating and visually unpleasant for many of our patients. Fungal infections on the fingernails and toenails, called onychomycosis, begin as subtle infections that grow and develop over time. This creates a long timeline of events that our patients don’t typically notice until the infection has overgrown. At Jennifer Armstrong MD, we see patients begin to notice something is wrong with their nails when they become brittle and crumble, or become thick and yellow. If you find that your nails are starting to look different than they usually do, we strongly encourage you to come in and see one of our medical staff members at your earliest convenience. We’ll be happy to sit down with you, assess your nails, and develop a personalized treatment plan to help you keep your nails healthy, strong, and beautiful.

What Causes Nail Disorders?

Like any fungus, nail fungus thrives in dark, moist areas. Because of this, we find that many of our patients date their nail fungal infections to getting a manicure or pedicure at a salon. That being said, fungal infections can also be a result of having diabetes or poor circulation, regularly wearing artificial nails, swimming in public pools, having a nail injury, having a weakened immune system, and regularly wearing closed-toe shoes. Dr. Armstrong’s medical team will be more than happy to help you go through your recent history and find out what’s causing your infection to occur, so you can prevent it from happening again in the future.

What Nail Disorder Treatments are Available?

Dr. Armstrong’s team of medical professionals is proud to offer the following nail disorder treatments to men and women:

  • Oral and Topical Prescription Medication
    • Anti-fungal prescription medication is an easy and non-invasive way to treat your fungal nail infection. We always encourage our patients to finish the entire round of anti-fungal medication to treat their infection, as stopping medication halfway through may cause a stronger infection to come back in its place.
  • Laser Therapy
    • We may recommend using our GentleYAG laser system to treat your fungal nail infection. This laser treatment doesn’t require any anesthesia and delivers successful results within just two treatment sessions.

How Much Does Nail Disorder Treatment Cost?

The cost of your nail disorder treatment will depend on the type of treatment you choose to receive, the extent of treatment needed to achieve your desired results, and the coverage provided by your current health insurance plan. To get a better idea of how much your nail disorder treatment will cost, we encourage you to come in for a private consultation.
